Before you learn a single AWS service, it is worth knowing exactly what you are walking into. Most of the unpleasant surprises on exam day are not about the cloud at all — they are about the format.

The facts, in one place

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is 65 questions in 90 minutes. It costs $100 USD. You pass with 700 on a scale of 100 to 1000, and the certification is valid for three years. You can sit it at a Pearson VUE test centre or online with a proctor watching through your webcam.

Questions come in two shapes: multiple choice, with one correct answer out of four, and multiple response, where you must select two or more correct answers from five or more options. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and multiple-response questions are all-or-nothing — partial credit does not exist. Both of those facts have direct consequences for how you sit the exam, which we will come back to.

The three things the format does that people do not expect

Fifteen of your 65 questions do not count. AWS mixes in unscored trial questions it is evaluating for future exams. They are not marked, they are not grouped, and you cannot identify them. The only sane response is to treat all 65 as scored — which is what the format intends. It also means that an oddly-worded question you cannot place might simply be one AWS is still testing. Do not let it rattle you.

Your score is scaled, not counted. 700 out of 1000 is not “70% correct”. Scaling exists so that slightly harder and slightly easier versions of the exam are equally fair, so the raw number of correct answers behind a 700 varies. Nobody outside AWS knows the exact conversion, and chasing it is wasted effort. Practise to be comfortably above the line, not to land on it.

There is no per-domain pass. You cannot fail by being weak in one domain, as long as your total clears 700. This matters for how you spend your last week: pushing a strong domain from good to excellent is worth less than pulling a weak one from bad to adequate.

What the weights actually tell you

The four domains are weighted 24 / 30 / 34 / 12. Read that as a study budget rather than a table:

  • Cloud Technology & Services — 34%, about 22 questions. The largest domain, and the one with the longest list of service names to keep apart.
  • Security & Compliance — 30%, about 19 questions. The heaviest single-topic domain, built almost entirely on the shared responsibility model.
  • Cloud Concepts — 24%, about 15 questions. Definitional, not technical — and punishing if your definitions are approximate.
  • Billing, Pricing & Support — 12%, about 8 questions. The smallest, the most factual, and the cheapest marks in the exam.

Technology and Security together are close to two thirds of the paper. If your preparation time is short, that is where it goes. But do not skip Billing on the strength of its 12% — it is the one domain where an evening of reading converts almost directly into marks, because there is nothing to reason about, only things to know.

Time, and the trap inside it

90 minutes for 65 questions is about 83 seconds per question, and that is a comfortable pace for this exam. The CLF-C02 does not use the long, scenario-heavy stems that make the Solutions Architect exam a race. Most questions are two or three lines.

Which creates a different trap: with time to spare, candidates talk themselves out of correct answers. The pattern is familiar to anyone who has sat one of these — you read a question, the answer is obvious, and then you begin to wonder whether it is too obvious and start constructing a reason for one of the other options. At Cloud Practitioner level, the obvious answer is usually right. The exam is testing whether you know what a service is for, not whether you can find the trick. Flag it, move on, come back if time allows — but change an answer only if you can name what you missed the first time.

Never leave a question blank. No penalty for a wrong answer means a blank is a guaranteed zero and a guess is not. Eliminate what you can and commit.

If English is not your first language

AWS grants a 30-minute extension for candidates taking the exam in a language that is not their first — 120 minutes instead of 90. It has to be requested in your AWS certification account before you book, it is not applied automatically, and it cannot be added retroactively. It costs nothing and requires no proof of language ability. If it applies to you, request it now rather than at booking time.

Knowing when you are ready

There is no honest formula, but there is a reliable signal, and it is not a percentage.

Take full-length practice tests under exam conditions — 65 questions, 90 minutes, no notes, no pausing. Score comfortably above the pass mark, more than once. And then apply the real test: for each question you got right, can you say why the other three options were wrong?

That last question is the one that separates candidates who pass from candidates who are surprised. It is entirely possible to score well on a practice test by recognising answers you have seen before, and to learn nothing transferable in the process. The exam will not show you those questions. It will show you questions built the same way, about things you have not seen — and the only skill that carries across is the ability to rule things out for a reason.

Which is why every explanation in this cluster spends more words on the wrong options than the right one. Start with the six below.

The anatomy of the CLF-C02 exam: 65 questions of which 50 are scored, 90 minutes, a passing score of 700 on a 100 to 1000 scale, a fee of 100 US dollars, and validity of three years. The four domains are weighted Cloud Concepts 24 percent, Security and Compliance 30 percent, Cloud Technology and Services 34 percent, and Billing and Support 12 percent. Fifteen unscored trial questions are mixed in unmarked.

CLF-C02 Question 1 of 6

How many questions on the CLF-C02 exam are scored?

Answer: B — 50 of the 65

The exam presents 65 questions, of which 50 count towards your score. The other 15 are unscored trial questions AWS is evaluating for future exams. Why not the others: not all 65 count, the number is not 60, and it does not vary — the split is fixed. The practical consequence is what matters: the trial questions are not marked in any way and you cannot identify them, so answer all 65 as though each one counts.

CLF-C02 Question 2 of 6

What is the passing score for the CLF-C02?

Answer: B — 700 on a scale of 100–1000

The result is reported as a scaled score from 100 to 1000, and 700 is the pass mark. Why not the others: it is not a raw percentage — scaling accounts for slight differences in difficulty between exam versions, so 700 scaled is not the same as answering 70% correctly. 720 is the SAA-C03 pass mark, a favourite mix-up. And the exam is not graded on a curve: your result depends on your performance, not on other candidates'.

CLF-C02 Question 3 of 6

A candidate is unsure of an answer with 20 minutes left. What is the best strategy?

Answer: B — Eliminate what you can, choose the best remaining option, and flag it for review

There is no penalty for a wrong answer on this exam, so an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero while a reasoned guess is not. Eliminate, choose, flag, move on. Why not the others: leaving it blank throws away a free chance. Option length and letter position are folklore — AWS writes distractors specifically to be plausible, and neither heuristic survives contact with a real item bank.

CLF-C02 Question 4 of 6

How long is the CLF-C02 certification valid?

Answer: C — Three years

AWS certifications are valid for three years, after which you recertify. Why not the others: one and two years are not AWS's cycle, and the certification does not last indefinitely — the cloud changes too quickly for that to mean anything. Note that passing a higher-level AWS certification also refreshes lower-level ones, which is why many candidates never sit the CLF-C02 a second time.

CLF-C02 Question 5 of 6

Which domain carries the most weight on the CLF-C02?

Answer: C — Cloud Technology & Services (34%)

Cloud Technology and Services is the largest domain at 34%, roughly 22 of the 65 questions. Why not the others: Security and Compliance is second at 30% and is the one most often assumed to be the largest — it is the heaviest security-focused domain, but not the biggest overall. Cloud Concepts is 24% and Billing is the smallest at 12%. The two together, Technology and Security, are nearly two thirds of the exam.

CLF-C02 Question 6 of 6

Where can the CLF-C02 be taken?

Answer: B — At a Pearson VUE test centre or as an online proctored exam

You choose between a physical Pearson VUE test centre and an online proctored exam taken from your own room. Why not the others: neither option is exclusive — both are available. And AWS offices do not administer certification exams; testing is delivered through the Pearson VUE partnership.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the current CLF-C02 format?
Yes — this page follows the CLF-C02 exam guide (2026 edition): 65 questions, 90 minutes, a scaled pass mark of 700 out of 1000, and the domain weights 24 / 30 / 34 / 12.
Are these real exam questions?
No. They are our own questions, written in the style and difficulty of the exam. Real exam items are protected by the AWS certification agreement, and using leaked ones can cost you the certification you just paid for.
Can I get extra time as a non-native English speaker?
AWS grants a 30-minute extension for candidates taking the exam in a non-native language, which takes the CLF-C02 from 90 to 120 minutes. It has to be requested in your certification account before you book the exam — it is not applied automatically, and it cannot be added afterwards.
What happens if I fail?
You may retake the exam after a 14-day waiting period, and the full fee applies again — which is the real argument for being sure before you book rather than after.
How do I know when I am ready?
Score consistently above the pass mark on full-length practice tests taken under exam conditions — 65 questions, 90 minutes, no notes — and be able to say why the wrong options were wrong, not just which answer was right. Recognising an answer you have seen before is not the same as being ready for one you have not.

Updated for CLF-C02 (July 2026). The sample questions above are our own work in the style of the exam — not real exam items. The exam itself is set and marked by the certification body.
