The S3 storage classes look like a long price list and reduce to two questions: how often is the data accessed, and how fast must it come back? Every class sits somewhere on that spectrum, and the CLF-C02 tests whether you can match a described access pattern to the right one. Nothing here needs a figure memorised — only the shape.

The spectrum, from warm to cold

  • S3 Standard — frequent access, instant, highest storage cost. The default.
  • S3 Standard-Infrequent Access (Standard-IA) — accessed rarely but needed instantly when it is; cheaper storage, plus a retrieval fee.
  • S3 One Zone-IA — like Standard-IA but stored in a single Availability Zone: cheaper, less resilient. Good for data you could recreate.
  • S3 Intelligent-Tiering — for unknown or changing patterns; AWS moves each object to the most cost-effective tier automatically.
  • S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval — archival; retrieval in minutes to hours.
  • S3 Glacier Deep Archive — the coldest and cheapest; retrieval in hours (up to about twelve).

The one trade-off that explains it all

As you move from Standard toward Deep Archive, storage cost falls and retrieval time rises (and retrieval can cost more). That single trade-off is the logic behind the whole spectrum. There is no free lunch: colder is cheaper to store precisely because it is slower to get back. Any answer that promises “cheaper with no downside,” or “faster as it gets colder,” is a distractor.

Reading the access pattern

Two questions resolve almost every item:

  • How often? Frequent → Standard. Infrequent → Standard-IA (or One Zone-IA if a single AZ is acceptable). Unknown → Intelligent-Tiering. Rarely, archival → Glacier.
  • How fast back? Instant → Standard or IA. Minutes to hours → Glacier Flexible Retrieval. Hours, cheapest → Deep Archive.

How to use the questions below

Answer each one before you reveal the explanation, and when you miss, read past the correct letter to why the other three fail. The distractors are always a neighbouring class — Standard-IA where One Zone-IA belongs, Deep Archive where Flexible Retrieval belongs. Matching the access pattern to the one class that fits is the whole skill, and it connects straight back to EC2 and S3 fundamentals and the cheat sheet.

Answer: A — S3 Standard

S3 Standard is built for frequently accessed data with instant retrieval, at the highest storage price. Why not the others: Standard-IA is cheaper but intended for infrequent access. The two Glacier classes are for archival data you rarely touch and can wait to retrieve. Frequent, instant access is S3 Standard.

Data is accessed only a few times a year but, when it is needed, must be retrieved instantly. Which class fits, at lower cost than Standard?

Answer: A — S3 Standard-Infrequent Access (Standard-IA)

Standard-IA costs less per gigabyte than Standard and still gives instant retrieval — the right fit for infrequently accessed but latency-sensitive data (a retrieval fee applies). Why not the others: Standard is more expensive for data touched only occasionally. Deep Archive retrieval takes hours, not instant. Intelligent-Tiering is for unknown patterns, not a known-infrequent one.

Infrequently accessed data can tolerate being stored in a single Availability Zone in exchange for a lower price. Which class fits?

Answer: A — S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (One Zone-IA)

One Zone-IA stores data in a single Availability Zone, which costs less than Standard-IA but is less resilient — a fine trade-off for data you could recreate. Why not the others: Standard-IA and Standard store across multiple Availability Zones for higher durability. Glacier Flexible Retrieval is archival. The single-AZ, lower-cost, infrequent option is One Zone-IA.

Access patterns are unpredictable and may change over time, and the team wants AWS to move objects between tiers automatically to optimise cost. Which class fits?

Answer: A — S3 Intelligent-Tiering

S3 Intelligent-Tiering monitors access and moves each object to the most cost-effective tier automatically — ideal when you cannot predict the pattern. Why not the others: Standard and One Zone-IA are fixed tiers you choose deliberately. Deep Archive is for data you know is cold. Unknown or changing patterns point to Intelligent-Tiering.

Archived data is rarely needed, but when it is, it must come back within minutes to a few hours. Which class fits?

Answer: A — S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval

Glacier Flexible Retrieval is archival storage with retrieval options ranging from minutes to hours. Why not the others: Deep Archive is cheaper still but its retrieval takes up to about twelve hours — too slow for a minutes-to-hours need. Standard-IA and Standard are for instant access at far higher storage cost. Minutes-to-hours archival is Glacier Flexible Retrieval.

As you move objects from S3 Standard toward S3 Glacier Deep Archive, what happens?

Answer: A — Storage cost falls, but retrieval takes longer and can cost more per retrieval

The colder the class, the lower the storage price — but the trade-off is slower (and sometimes costlier) retrieval. Why not the others: there is a real trade-off, so it is not 'cheaper with no downside'. Retrieval gets slower, not faster, as data goes colder. And durability remains high across the classes; the variable is access speed and cost, not whether the data survives.

Ask two things: how often is the data accessed, and how fast must it come back? Frequent and instant is Standard; infrequent but instant is Standard-IA (or One Zone-IA if a single AZ is acceptable); unknown is Intelligent-Tiering; cold is Glacier, with Deep Archive the coldest and cheapest.
