Cost management on the CLF-C02 is a matching exercise. AWS gives you a small set of tools, each with one clear job, and the exam simply checks that you can pair a scenario with the right one. There is no depth to learn — only the boundaries between four tools.
- Cost Explorer — analyses spend that has already happened, with charts and filters. Use it to answer “what drove our costs.”
- AWS Budgets — sets a threshold and alerts you when actual or forecast spend crosses it. It looks forward.
- Cost and Usage Report (CUR) — the most granular billing data, every line item, for loading into your own analysis tools.
- Cost allocation tags — labels on resources so you can attribute spend to a department or project and report by those groups.
The distinction that decides most questions
The cleanest split is direction of time. Cost Explorer looks backward — it explains what you already spent. Budgets looks forward — it guards a limit you set. Almost every question that offers both is really asking which direction the scenario points. “Show me last quarter’s spend by service” is Cost Explorer. “Tell me before we go over budget” is Budgets.
Two more tools sit at the edges. When a scenario needs raw, exhaustive billing data for external analysis, that is the CUR, not Cost Explorer’s summaries. When it needs to slice one account’s costs by team, that is cost allocation tags.
Multiple accounts: consolidated billing
One more idea appears: an organisation with several accounts can use consolidated billing through AWS Organizations to get a single bill, and combined usage can reach volume discount tiers sooner than any single account would. If a question describes many accounts and one invoice, that is consolidated billing — not a cost tool, but a billing structure.
How to use the questions below
Answer each one before opening the explanation, then read past the correct letter to why the other three fail. The distractors are always the neighbouring tools — Cost Explorer where Budgets belongs, the CUR where a summary belongs. Matching a scenario to the one tool that fits is the entire skill, and the reasoning below drills it.
Updated for CLF-C02 (July 2026). The sample questions above are our own work
in the style of the exam — not real exam items. The exam itself is set and marked
by the certification body.
